Ayurveda (the Sanskrit word for “knowledge of life”) is a 6,000 year old system of healing from India. Ayurveda empowers individuals to live in harmony with our own nature, and with Nature itself. Within our bodies and all throughout the universe, there are 3 doshas which govern all of existence: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Functioning elementally in the universe, Vata is Air and Space, Pitta is Fire and Water, and Kapha is Earth and Water. The three states of matter: Gas, Liquid and Solid, can be though of as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, respectively.
Within our bodies, the doshas operate like this:
Vata governs air, movement, flow, and breath.
Pitta governs heat, sight (including insight,) intensity, metabolism.
Kapha governs structure, support, lubrication and immunity.
By feeling your pulse and performing a visual assessment, an Ayurvedic Practitioner gets a sense of which of these doshas may have an imbalance. Imbalances can be corrected and blissful health restored by following a set of recommendations for balancing the physiology. These recommendations may include diet & lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, yoga asanas, color therapy, sound healing, meditation and therapeutic massage.
